“waitin’ ‘round the bend is a gift we open slowly, delighting in each moment. The poems roll with engaging, easy movement, personal yet universal glimpses of a nature-filled world. Sparse, elegant, and inspired brushwork evokes the spirit of being, quietude, and presence. Reading this is a wonderful way of traveling to a place filled with harmony and peace.” –Susan Frame, author of Japanese Ink Painting Beginner’s Guide to Sumi-e “There is delicacy and strength in this beautiful book of visual art and language. Inspired by Japanese esthetic tradition, and grounded in our time and place – look for the wisteria, the red clay road, the rocking chair and mason jar – the Rodning’s waitin’ ‘round the bend offers us the gift of a third art form, a dance of perceptions.” –Roy Hoffman, author of the nonfiction, Alabama Afternoons and novels, Chicken Dreaming Corn and Come Landfall

I approached this book with eagerness, wanting to experience haiku illustrated with sumi-e. I was disappointed to find that the author of the poems consistently replaced many consonants with an apostrophe, presumably to carry on with the slang feeling of the title poem. After awhile, this became tiresome and irritating ("ol' rockin' chair / hidden in tall grass / settin' empty") and I'd read the poems again, supplying the missing letters in my mind, trying to appreciate the meaning without the stumbling block of apostrophes. Some of the phrases are lovely -- "fragrant sound -- / wisteria brushin' / against the shed" -- but why can't the wisteria be brushing instead of brushin'? But this is a matter of taste, and perhaps it will not bother others as it does me.Very few of the pages had sumi-e illustrations. They were lovely when they appeared and I wished there were more. The book ends with an excerpt from a poem by Robert Burns in which there are several typos (two misplaced apostrophes and the second occurrence of the word "time" should be "tide". Since I believe this book is printed on demand, perhaps they can easily be fixed.
The layout and format of the book are attractive. In addition to the haiku which forms the core, there are two short chapters discussing mindfulness and temporality.
