The Apostolic Fathers A Narrative Introduction Kenneth Berding 9781532616921 Books Reviews

Berding's book on the Apostolic Fathers is a refreshing new approach to getting to know the earliest Christian writings. The book is an easy and enjoyable way to learn about a period that many people would love to know something about, but that until now hasn't been easy to access. The historical and literary notes in the back are worth the price of the book on their own. I gladly recommend it.
What a useful little book! When I heard Professor Berding had written an introduction on the Apostolic Fathers, I didn't realize it was written in narrative form. By introducing these writings in a series of fictional conversations, the book naturally gives the context and breathes life of personality, setting, and drama.

The 10 documents given attention were written approximately 95-156 AD by the first few generations of Christians, and vary in genre from collections of teachings and church letters to apocalyptic allegory and apologetics. Each is presented in a chapter that explores the original author and audience, a summary of the contents, and mature analysis on how it fits within Christian teachings - and as someone who has read the primary sources myself (in the wonderful Holmes translation), I can attest these introductions are grounded in the historical documents.

The book not only has well-translated excerpts from each text, but also valuable historical and literary notes at the end that make clear what was speculative in the story, as well as a map showing the locations of places mentioned. Although there are times the dialogue feels a little unnatural as it works as a vehicle for the introduction, there are also moments where you experience the city of Smyrna as a real, historical place, where the author himself has lived.

This book is not just a repository of facts, but one that invites you to form an affectionate relationship with some of the very first believers. If you'd like to get to know them, read it!
In this creative introduction to the Apostolic Fathers, Dr. Berding offers a thoroughly enjoyable insight into the lives of some of the most influential early Christian writers. Kenneth Berding lived in Smyrna, the home of Polycarp, and brings a unique inside look into the culture and social landscape of these incredible writers. Not only is this book informative, it is highly engaging because of its narrative approach. Regardless of your knowledge of the Apostolic Fathers, you will enjoy this fun immersion into the incredible life of the early church.
There are many ways that one can teach history. Many undertake the task as a simple regurgitation of facts to their audience. Some teachers present history with the basic formula of “On this day, this person did this.” This is often why people complain about studying history! I will be honest and say that I do not mind a simple “on this day. . .” approach to learning history. That approach does lend itself to objectivity and historical accuracy without introducing bias of interpretation. However, it is quite dry. Dr. Kenneth Berding has provided a different approach…and I like it. Berding undertakes the study of the Apostolic Fathers from a narrative perspective. The Apostolic Fathers A Narrative Introduction is a fast, easy read about the beliefs and struggles of the early Church.

Berding writes from the perspective of the Apostolic Father, Polycarp, while he is in hiding from the Roman authorities. The narrative follows the story of Polycarp and his companions while they wait for word from Polycarp’s home church in Smyrna that it is safe for Polycarp to return. The text is historical fiction, but it is much more history than fiction. Berding has taken excerpts from Polycarp’s letters and other historical documents and neatly woven them into a dialogue between Polycarp and his companions. While very little “happens” in the book (i.e. it includes much dialogue), the story and writing style are captivating.

Berding’s narrative shows Polycarp spending each day (often morning, afternoon and evening) teaching his companions about various aspects of the early church. Through this, Berding discusses ten of the earliest extra-biblical texts. Beginning with the earliest writing with 1 Clement (Berding notes that this is disputed, but is still commonly accepted), moving through the To Diognetus, Berding uses common language and narrative style to tell a story about the early Church. Each chapter provides a general date of writing, the reason the text was written, and then a thorough explanation of the content of the text. This is the greatest value of Berding’s work. It is difficult for a lay reader to navigate through the writings of the early church. The early Church writers used a very different writing style than what 21st Century readers are used to reading. Berding does a wonderful job of bringing the writing of the early church into a modern style.

At the end of each chapter, Berding then includes excerpts from the text referred to in the chapter so the reader can dig deeper into the history of the Christian Church. Berding concludes with the Martyrdom of Polycarp which, as the title indicates, describes how Polycarp finished his life on this earth.

The Apostolic Fathers A Narrative Introduction is easily the best introduction to the apostolic fathers that I have read. Berding’s writing style is fluid and clear. His selections of texts from the early Church were perfect for an introductory text. I would HIGHLY recommend picking up a copy from Wipf & Stock or . It will not take you long to get through the book and you will have a greater appreciation for the giants on who’s shoulders we stand
This book, through a beautiful narrative format, gives the story of some of the Apostolic Fathers. Most prominent in this book is the martyrdom of Polycarp, which is truly a breathtaking moment in church history. I was challenged, encouraged, and strengthened by reading this book. I highly recommend this book to students of Church History.
This book was engaging right off the bat and it never had a dull moment. It beautifully combined narrative with academic scholarship and made it both fun and understandable. Each chapter gives you more than enough insight into the individual father and the events that surround their writings. Anyone interested in learning about the apostolic fathers should begin here, it is simple enough that anyone can read it, but also covered with great insight that aids you in your own study of the apostolic fathers. Truly one of the clearest and best written works I have read.
